The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Alan Kramer

Alan Kramer, historian and general editor of 1914-18 online 'International Encyclopedia of the First World War' was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

Alan Kramer is professor of European History at Trinity College Dublin. He is internationally known for his research on the First World War and the cultural history of violence. He is a general editor of 1914–1918-online: International Encyclopedia of the First World War and is currently working on an international project on ‘fascist warfare’ and a monograph on the global history of concentration camps. He is a recipient of the internationally prestigious Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History and a fellow of the Humboldt Foundation and recently won its Research Prize.
