The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

John Ringwood is professor of electronic engineering at Maynooth University and the Director of the Centre for Ocean Energy Research. He is former (founding) Head of the Dept. of Electronic Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Maynooth University, and former chair of the Irish Engineering Deans group. He received his education at Dublin Institute of Technology (HDipEE, BSc(Eng), Strathclyde University (PhD) and Maynooth University (MA (MusTech)) and is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, a Senior member of IEEE and a chartered engineer. His research specialism is in control systems and its application, and he has published over 400 peer reviewed paper in this, and related areas, and co-authored 2 books. John is currently associate editor for IET Renewable Energy, Journal of Ocean Energineering and Marine Energy, and IEEE Trans on Sustainable Energy and acted as guest editor on a range of other journals. He has acted as a programme and/or research external examiner to more than 30 institutions worldwide and had graduated over 40 research students. He has received commercialisation awards from Maynooth University and Enterprise Ireland, was awarded the Chevalier des Palmes Academiques by the French Government in recognition of his contribution to wave energy research.
