Dr Joe MacDonagh is a Chartered Psychologist, a Chartered Scientist and a former President of the Psychological Society of Ireland- the professional body for psychologists in Ireland. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Management and a Companion of the British Academy of Management. His research concerns occupational psychology; the application of psychology to the world of work and organisation, specifically mental health amongst workers, professionals and service users in health-based settings such as hospitals and clinics. He is a member of the Joint Research Ethics Committee of St James's and Tallaght University hospitals. He has been a member of the Life and Health Sciences committee (formerly the Life and Medical Sciences committee) since 2018.
