We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Thirty-nine new lives added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography

Thirty-nine lives were added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography online in December 2018, our eighteenth online update.

Among these new entries, written on subjects who died between 2011 and 2013, are poet Seamus Heaney (1939–2013), musician Philip Chevron (1957–2013) and writer Maeve Binchy (1939–2012).

Others of note include filmmaker and environmentalist Éamon De Buitléar (1930–2013), human rights activist Inez McCormack (1943–2013) and Franciscan missionary Stan Brennan (1929–2012),

Benedictine monk and historian Mark Tierney (1925–2011), republican paramilitary Dolours Price (1950–2013) and journalist Cathal O’Shannon (1928–2011) also feature.

This update of of thirty-nine lives can be found at dib.cambridge.org, and brings the total number of lives in the Dictionary to 10,500.
