The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Tom Lodge

Tom Lodge, contemporary political historian was admitted as a Member of the Royal Irish Academy on 24 May 2019.

Tom Lodge is professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and a dean at the University of Limerick. He has published more than 120 journal articles and book chapters on the contemporary political history of South Africa. Among his seven widely cited books is the highly influential Black politics in South Africa since 1945 (Longman, 1983), which has shaped thinking on this subject over three decades.
