THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Library Lunchtime Lecture series 'Sisters II'. Dr Pádraig Ó Macháin, Professor of Modern Irish, UCC, will give the first lecture in this new series.

Following on from the success of our 2019 Library Lunchtime Lecture series 'Sisters', we are pleased to announce we are continuing with this theme in spring 2020 with five new lectures and speakers. The series celebrates the lives and achievements of five families of sisters who have made their mark on Irish life. You can listen back to last year's lectures via Soundcloud.

Speaker

Pádraig Ó Macháin, Professor of Modern Irish, University College Cork; formerly Professor, School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Co-Founder of Irish Script on Screen 1997, which he directed until taking up his position in Cork in 2012.
Research interests include literature in Irish from medieval times to the present day; manuscript studies - palaeography and codicology; the history of paper in Ireland, to assist in the study of which he established and maintains a website dedicated to watermarks in Irish documents. He is committed to the Gaeltacht and to Irish as a living language - he co-founded and co-edits An Linn Bhuí: Iris Ghaeltacht na nDéise, which this year will publish its 24th volume. In 2019 he received an IRC Advanced Laureate Award to study inks and vellums in medieval Irish manuscripts, and established a collaboration with the Library of Congress, Washington, and the Library of the RIA to further this research.
