The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Eoin O'Mahony bursary event review

The Eoin O’Mahony Bursary in Irish history was set up by friends and family of the late Eoin O’Mahony.

Bursary winners, committee members and invited guests gathered in Academy House on 20 February 2020 to hear the outcome of the research undertaken and to reminisce the late Eoin O'Mahony. RIA Humanities Secretary, Mary O'Dowd opened the event and welcomed guests before an introduction from Charles Lysaght, and short presentations from Anthony Cotter and Nora Hicky of the O’Mahony Clan.

Bursary winners presented on the outcomes of their work:

  • Steven Egan: The partition of Ireland in the transnational perspectives of the Dominions of Canada and Australia
  • Jennifer Redmond: Charlotte Grace O'Brien: Documenting an Extraordinary Life
  • Ciaran McDonnell: For king or country? Transnational military identity and the Irish officers in the French Revolution
  • Jay Roszman: Outrage in the Age of Reform: Irish Agrarian Violence, Imperial Insecurity, and British Governing Policy 1830-1845
  • Marie Léoutre: Irishmen in the service of Spain and migration to the New World in the Eighteenth Century: the case of Hugo Oconór
  • Kathleen McCrudden: Sophie de Grouchy and the End of the Enlightenment (1785-1815)
