THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Going digital with A history of Ireland in 100 words

06 April 2020

Enjoy our exhibition virtually while staying safe at home.

The Royal Irish Academy is closed to protect the public, as are the museums and cultural institutions that had planned to host our touring exhibition 'A history of Ireland in 10 words'. We have put together the exhibition virtually so that you can still enjoy it while staying safe. You can visit our exhibition here.

The exhibition accompanies the book A history of Ireland in 100 words by Sharon Arbuthnot, Máire Ní Mhaonaigh and Gregory Toner. It was created to inspire fresh interest in the Irish language by revealing connections between words we still use and words used in a bygone era. The history of Ireland told in this exhibition represents one-tenth of the words foregrounded in the book and a very small proportion of those preserved in the Dictionary of Irish Language (eDIL). We hope visitors will be enticed to dip into the book and the dictionary, and so experience other words that express further strands of Ireland’s rich and varied story.

While we are closed, you can still buy the book on our website and we will process your order as soon as we reopen. If you can't wait to read it, you can purchase the eBook today or access it through JSTOR via your institution or library.
