In May 2019, the Royal Irish Academy hosted a ground-breaking seminar on ‘Historical mental health records: the ethics of access and preservation policies’. This event explored current practices in Ireland and internationally regarding the access to and use of such sensitive records.

A full report from the seminar is available here.

Following discussions at the seminar and subsequently, a proposed ‘national protocol’ on access and use of records was prepared by members of the Grangegorman Histories Expert Working Group and submitted to the HSE. The matter will be considered further as soon as the current COVID-19 emergency allows.
