THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Siúlach scéalach - Travelling with Mícheál Ó Cléirigh 1627-1629

In 1627, historian and scribe, Mícheál Ó Cléirigh embarked on a journey across Ireland on a quest to record the Lives of the Saints. Follow Ó Cléirigh on his scribal adventures through an almost forgotten landscape and discover what he found along the way.

This interactive StoryMap, developed by Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge and the Royal Irish Academy Library, brings to life the work of a 17th century scribe who travelled extensively, in arduous circumstances, to consult precious Gaelic manuscript sources then kept in houses and monasteries across Ireland, but now preserved in the Royal Irish Academy, UCD, the Royal Library, Brussels and other institutions.
