The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Simon Swain

University of Warwick

Simon Swain FBA is Vice-President National and Regional Engagement at the University of Warwick and Vice-President for Research and Higher Education Policy at the British Academy, chairing the Committee which oversees the Academy’s core research funding activity and strategy.

Simon spent many of his earlier years building up Warwick’s new department of Classics and then ran its Faculty of Arts. He has also been responsible for Warwick’s Arts and Social Sciences and its international strategy at executive level. He is still active researching the interface between the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome and the Islamicate empire of the middle ages and he currently co-leads the Streamlining Galen project on the ‘small texts’ that made canonical medicine digestible and teachable.
