Cultural memories and nationalist sentiments – ALLEA webinar
05 October 2020ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, invites you to this open webinar and to submit questions in advance.
The online event “It’s complicated…” Europe facing cultural memories and nationalist sentiments will take place on 5 November, at 16:00 CET and will feature Professor Joep Leerssen, 2020 Laureate of the ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values. As cultural historian, he is one of the most remarkable figures in the critical analysis of ethnic and cultural stereotyping. He will offer insights into “feelgood nationalism”, which is still an important part of a consumer culture, and forms an unobtrusive but pervasive presence in our everyday lives without which we cannot understand the contemporary forces of xenophobia and illiberal anticosmopolitism.
This webinar is a part of the Berlin Science Week, a major conference, which takes place annually in Berlin and this year also digitally. The Conversation is its media partner. The event is open to all but registration is required.
The Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values is awarded by ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, jointly with the foundation Compagnia di San Paolo as major supporter.
This webinar will be kindly facilitated by Ms Laura Hood of The Conversation UK. While the Q&A session will be open to all participants, questions can be submitted in advance to secretariat@allea.org by 29 October.
