The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Shortlist announced for 2020 US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards

Shortlist announced for 2020 US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards.

The US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards are a joint initiative of the Royal Irish Academy and the American Chamber of Commerce. Now in their sixth year, the awards recognise excellence in research innovation, creation, process and invention by an organisation, as a result of US Foreign Direct Investment in Ireland. The awards are kindly sponsored by KPMG and Ulster Bank with media support from The Irish Times.

The awards are presented in three categories:

  1. The Irish operations of US headquartered and controlled multinational company
  2. An Irish Higher Education Institute or Research Centre with US corporate links
  3. Innovation in Talent Development 

The nine shortlisted candidates across the three categories are:

1. Irish Operations of a US Multinational:

  • Boston Scientific, Clonmel
  • Boston Scientific, Cork
  • IBM Research Foresight
  • IBM Research AI in Healthcare

2. Higher Educational Institute:

  • Ulster University/Avellino Labs
  • Waterford Institute of Technology /Boston Scientific, Clonmel

3. Innovation in Talent Development:

  • Intel
  • Microsoft Ireland
  • PepsiCo

The winners of the 2020 US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards will be announced at a virtual presentation event on Thursday, 10 December with speakers including Irish Ambassador to the US, Dan Mulhall and Minster for Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, T.D.
