Science Europe publishes updated Practical Guide to the International Alignment of Research Data Management

03 February 2021

Science Europe’s Practical Guide to the International Alignment of Research Data Management offers targeted guidance for organisations, disciplines, and individual researchers.

Originally released in 2019 and following its successful uptake by many organisations, Science Europe’s Practical Guide to the International Alignment of Research Data Management was updated in January 2021 to include guidance to support the evaluation of data management plans (DMPs).

The guide presents core requirements for DMPs and an evaluation rubric, as well as criteria for the selection of trustworthy repositories. This information provides research organisations and communities with a common basis from which to develop data management practices and policies. Researchers will also find guidance on how to comply with organisational requirements.

The rubric, developed to aid the evaluation of research data management planning and activities, is aimed at research support staff, research officers and reviewers, institutional data managers, but also the researchers themselves who can make use of it to validate the information they provide in their DMPs.

In addition to the update, a set of adaptable templates for organisational or disciplinary use are now available. The different elements of the guide should be considered a minimum requirement that can be amended to accommodate institutional or disciplinary policies and practices.

The guide has been widely accepted and used by researchers, organisations and research evaluators, and is the reference for research data management in the upcoming EC's Framework Programme Horizon Europe. The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) has also leveraged the guide in training programmes and other specialised guidance.

For more information and to download the guide and templates visit the Science Europe website.
