The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Owen Patrick Ward

Programme Coordinator NUIG Access Centre

Owen Patrick Ward (B.A., PME) is a Programme Coordinator at the NUI Galway Access Centre and the first Irish Traveller elected to a University governing authority in Ireland, when he was elected to NUI Galway’s Údarás na hOllscoile in 2020. He was appointed by the Minister for Justice and Equality to the National Anti-Racism Committee which has been tasked with drawing up a new Action Plan Against Racism for Ireland. Owen has a proven record of advocating and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion across all sectors of society, in addition to ensuring a voice for those from ethnic minority groups and lower socioeconomic backgrounds through informing inclusive policies based on both experience and evaluation of current policies and practices. Also, he is committed to widening participation in higher education of those from diverse and socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds.
