This seminar is presented by the RIA’s Standing Committee for International Affairs, the Institute of International and European Affairs and the Commission on the Defence Forces.
This seminar will contribute to further expert and public debate on an important national issue of the current situation and future development of the Defence Forces. The seminar also links into Ireland’s long-standing engagement with the United Nations and to the on-going development of defence cooperation within the European Union.
The morning and online seminar will be held under the Chatham House Rule, to encourage full and open discussion with all stakeholders.
The following themes will be explored:
- 'Small states defence forces' will address particular defence challenges faced by small states, comparisons with other small states and the roles of the reserve Defence Forces. These issues will be examined for learnings on how other countries develop their national defence policies and reflect EU/UN/NATO demands currently and into the future.
- ‘Irish Defence Forces-threats and roles’ will include discussion on the context of threats and security challenges; the role of the Defence Forces and level of ambition of military taskings; the geo-political and cyber environment; and international peacekeeping operations.
- ‘Envisaging the Irish Defences Forces to 2030 and beyond’ will be forward looking and aim to envisage how the Defence Forces might look in 10-20 years hence and how that will differ from today. The role of the Reserve Defence Force in a future joint-force construct will be included in the discussion, which will deal with the topic, such as structure, staffing, land, maritime and air defence.
Download the programme. There will be a report on the seminar to capture the discussion, which will also be subject to the Chatham House Rule to encourage full and open discussion with all stakeholders during the seminar.
