Watch Academy Discourse 'Celebrity culture up to and in the pandemic'
06 May 2021Diane Negra, MRIA explores the primacy, ubiquity and ambivalence of celebrity in the pandemic at a time when we are deprived of various modes of communal sociality and connectedness.
In this Academy Discourse Diane Negra, MRIA discusses how in recent decades the extraordinary, admirable Hollywood star whose exceptional talent is their defining feature has come to be replaced in many ways by celebrities who are brought down to earth operating in a marketplace where tabloidism, reality television and social media predominate. Such celebrities experience a severed bond with traditional Hollywood and are highly financialized. Profit-generation is often openly their key function.
The Respondent is Dr Lucy Bolton, Reader and Reader in Film Studies and Deputy Head of Film at Queen Mary University, London.
Dan Carey, MRIA, Humanties Secretary chaired the Q&A session of the event.
