University College Cork joins DRI

20 May 2021

We are pleased to announce that the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) at University College Cork (UCC), in collaboration with UCC Library, have joined the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI).

The DRI is a national digital repository that preserves and provides long-term access to Ireland’s humanities, social sciences, and cultural heritage data. Joining DRI and becoming part of the DRI network opens a whole range of opportunities for collaborations between the DRI and the UCC research community from training and networking events, to support for best practice in digital preservation, digital archiving, Open Science, and findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data management.

UCC Library consists of the Boole Library and the Boston Scientific Health Sciences Library. UCC Library offers innovative services, resources, and spaces to meet the learning, teaching, and research needs of the whole UCC community. UCC is continually developing new services, platforms, and collaborations to ensure they are meeting the growing needs of their users.

Colette McKenna, Director of Library Services, UCC Library remarked:

Joining the DRI in collaboration with our colleagues in CACSSS and supporting its use through the Research Data Service in UCC Library provides our researchers with an excellent opportunity to share and showcase their outputs to a wider audience as FAIR Data. Access to a range of expertise and learning opportunities in digital preservation through the DRI network will also be of real benefit to the UCC Community. The collaboration between the Library, CACSSS, and the DRI is a significant step in UCC’s Open Research journey and one we are eager and excited to progress.

CACSS in UCC is a diverse community with an active and engaged research faculty. It provides many opportunities for study and research to students and researchers including access to unique collections and archives identifying it as a destination for scholars worldwide.

Dr Helena Buffery, Vice Head of Research, CACSSS also endorsed the new membership of DRI:

We are really looking forward to strengthening our connections to the DRI in the important mission of sharing and preserving diverse aspects of Ireland’s humanities, social sciences, and cultural heritage data. Researchers across CACSSS at UCC are committed to ensuring the data emerging from their work is made available to the widest possible audiences and are keen to enhance their capacity to do so through the tools and training opportunities enabled by the DRI.

DRI Director Dr Natalie Harrower welcomed our newest member:

We are so excited to welcome our colleagues from UCC Library and CACSSS as members, and to continue the longstanding collaborations that have been in place between our two institutions. The preservation of digital social and cultural resources and the sharing of research data are both key priorities for DRI, and they both are also activities that require collaboration, interdisciplinary expertise, and ongoing attention to new methods and requirements. Having the Library and CACSSS join forces to join DRI is a great example of this collaborative spirit, and we very much look forward to ensuring their goals are met, and to moving forward best practice in partnership with them.

DRI and UCC have a long-standing relationship through various individuals, departments and functions, and have collaborated on numerous education and outreach events, research projects, and research proposals. Recently there have been a number of joint initiatives for supporting the use of the FAIR data principles throughout the research data lifecycle. DRI and UCC will build on this collaboration in an upcoming launch event at UCC on 26 May to raise visibility and awareness of DRI within the research community. DRI looks forward to working with UCC on supporting the management and preservation of researchers’ data for the long term and to sharing their outputs more widely.
