The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Affiliated international prizes

The Royal Irish Academy is a member of several global academic networks and international scholarly associations.

We work to raise the international profile of Ireland’s researchers and research networks, strengthen the voice of the sciences, humanities and social sciences and support international collaboration and mobility through Academy grants, awards and prizes programmes. We work closely with sister academies including international research collaboration grants.

The Royal Irish Academy nominates suitable candidates for esteemed and prestigious international prizes. In addition to endorsing nominations, the Academy communicates successful candidates’ activities to national academics and policymakers in Ireland.

This prize is awarded to scientists who have achieved distinction in the field of Applied Mathematics to Physical or Natural Sciences or Engineering

These prizes are awarded for achievements in the arts, music, literature, history, philosophy, medicine, and physical and mathematical sciences

Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes »

This award is granted every year for outstanding achievements in biomedical research

Baillet Latour Health Prize »

This prize honours individual scientists in the fields of medicine, biology or chemistry for ground-breaking work

Ernst Schering Prize »

Prizes are awarded to people or organisations who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, or culture

International Balzan Foundation Prize »

The IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists is intended to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers

This prize recognises the work of individuals who promote sound science and evidence on a matter of public interest, facing difficulty or hostility in doing so
