We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

From outlying villages to townships: suburbs in nineteenth-century Dublin

For Culture Night 2021, the Irish Historic Towns Atlas presents an exhibition on the Dublin suburbs series. 

This exhibition includes samples from each of Irish Historic Towns Atlas Dublin suburbs series. To date, Clontarf  by Colm Lennon was published in 2018 and Rathmines by Séamas Ó Maitiú will be published in October 2021. 'Dumcondra' by Ruth McManus and 'Kilmainham/Inchicore' by Frank Cullen will be published in the coming years. An extended version of this exhibition will be published in 2022 in the proceedings of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas seminar, 'Town and country', that took place in May 2021.
