We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Watch: Learning from Covid 19 How Science Can Help Build Global Resilience

On the 5th of July 2021, Ambassador Paul Johnston and RIA President Mary Canning convened a webinar to hear UK and Irish perspectives on applying the lessons from Covid 19 to strengthen our preparedness for future pandemics. The webinar is now available to watch.

 

G7 leaders, meeting in Cornwall, committed to strengthening our collective defences against future pandemics – including investing in innovation with the aim of making safe and effective vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics available within 100 days of an international public health emergency being declared.

UK and Irish scientists have been at the centre of our national and global responses to Covid-19. This webinar will explore their experience to date, and the role the UK, Irish and global scientific community can play in preventing, detecting and responding to future pandemics.

Professor Adrian Hill gave opening reflections on his work developing vaccines against Covid-19, ebola and malaria, followed by a panel discussion and questions from the virtual audience.
