About the Role

Position:         Project Manager, Research Data

Reports to:     Director, Digital Repository of Ireland

Department:   Digital Repository of Ireland

This is a three-year specific purpose contract for a Project Manager at the Digital Repository of Ireland to assist in developing organisational, national and European capacity in research data sharing and re-use across research domains and sectors.

The aim of the post is to build DRI’s capacity for best practice Research Data Management (RDM) in line with national and international guidelines on open science and data management, with particular attention to developments in Ireland’s National Open Research Forum (NORF) and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The successful candidate will work with researchers and research communities to support the development of FAIR practices, particularly in relation to arts, humanities and social science communities in Ireland, and to assist in developing the capacity for a range of research communities to participate in the EOSC by leveraging and building upon the structures and the work of the Research Data Alliance (RDA).

The post involves collaborating with stakeholders across Europe and may involve travel depending on evolving pandemic restrictions and practices.

Key responsibilities

  • Reporting to the DRI Director, plan, manage, deliver and monitor DRI’s responsibilities to the Research Data Alliance (RDA) in the Horizon Europe funded EOSC Future project including:

- Building capacity for underrepresented research communities in RDA to participate in the EOSC by actively reaching out to stakeholders to improve EOSC awareness and readiness levels
- Assisting in coordinating international data commons initiatives to ensure technical, policy, social and cultural knowledge exchange and alignment of EOSC
- Synchronising international open knowledge practices and policies related to reward and incentive indicators to support researcher uptake of Open Science practices

  • Work with researchers and research data experts in Ireland to support FAIR implementation and alignment across the arts, humanities and social sciences
  • Align DRI’s support for FAIR data management with RDA outputs, NORF recommendations, EOSC guidelines and global solutions (i.e., via RDA or CODATA global open research commons)
  • Contribute more broadly to the ongoing development of the DRI’s capacity in research data management with attention to technical requirements, training and policy developments
  • Actively contribute to DRI grant and funding proposals, task forces, and other DRI activities as assigned

Person specification:

Essential criteria

  • A post graduate degree qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience in the area of research data management
  • Experience managing projects from initial scoping through completion and reporting
  • Expertise in supporting Open Science policy and implementation
  • Knowledge of the evolving policy and funding landscape in Ireland and Europe related to research data management, preservation and sharing, including knowledge of Open Access, open data and Open Science
  • Evidence of excellent personal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively with a wide array of stakeholders
  • Evidence of excellent written communication skills, particularly report writing and briefs
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, while also working flexibly as a member of a cross-disciplinary team

Desirable criteria

  • A doctoral degree in a related discipline
  • Experience working on European projects, particularly in an engagement role
  • Experience in research data management/stewardship
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programmes
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with stakeholders across domain and geographical boundaries
  • Active participation with the RDA or similar data-focused organisations
  • Good understanding of the EOSC stakeholder groups, roles and landscape of projects/initiatives supporting its implementation

Salary: The salary for this position is on the AES Scale: €45,842 – €60,981. Candidates should note that entry will be at the minimum of the scale and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with government pay policy. Candidates should note that different pay and conditions may apply if, immediately prior to appointment, the appointee is a serving civil or public servant.

Hours of work: The normal hours of work are 37 hours per week. There is flexibility factored into the standard 7.4 hour working day, specific requirement can be agreed with your line manager.    

Hours of work may be adjusted from time to time in line with government policy. Overtime is not paid in respect of excess attendance which, should it arise, is discharged by time-off in lieu at times agreed in advance. Some flexibility around working hours will be required in response to the varying demands of the office.

Leave: The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per annum pro-rata for shorter periods. Entitlement to leave for public holidays is in accordance with the terms of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. There is a requirement to take up to four days annual leave where the Academy is closed at Easter and Christmas.

Medical:  Staff shall, if required, and at the expense of the Academy, submit to a medical examination by a registered medical practitioner nominated by the Academy and shall authorise such medical practitioner to disclose and to discuss with the Academy the results of the examination and the matters which arise from it so that the Academy can ascertain any matters that they consider might impair a staff member from properly discharging his/her duties.

Pension: Details of the appropriate pension scheme will be provided upon determination of appointee’s status.

Permanent pension contribution: This appointment is subject to the Additional Superannuation Contribution (ASC) effective from 1 January 2019.
