THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. Library participation in OS200: digitally re-mapping Ireland's Ordnance Survey Heritage

19 October 2021

The library's Ordnance Survey collection is featuring in a new IRC/AHRC funded project that will celebrate the bicentenary of the survey in Ireland in 2024. The RIA and DRI are participating partners with Professor Keith Lilley (QUB) and Cat Porter (UL) as principal investigators.

OS200

OS200 is a three-year project which is jointly funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as part of a programme of research to bring together world-leading expertise in the digital humanities across the UK and Ireland. The project aims to gather historic Ordnance Survey (OS) maps and texts to form a single freely accessible online resource for academic and public use. The project website can be viewed here

RIA OS Maps

The Royal Irish Academy Library holds a full set of the first edition OS maps, drawn on a scale of six inches to one mile. These large-scale maps are bound in volumes, arranged by county, and are available for consultation in the Reading Room. Later editions were also produced but these are not held by the Royal Irish Academy.
