Applications open for the Nowlan Digitisation Scheme

17 December 2021

The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to announce that the Nowlan Digitisation scheme is open to those working with archaeological sources and resources for the first time until 15 February 2022.

This scheme aims to expand the range of digitised archaeological sources available through open and free access to researchers, for private study or education purposes. Proposals can take two forms:

  1. The digitisation of an archaeological source or sources (including making it searchable and freely available online)
  2. The updating of existing digital archaeological resources to enable continued online public access

The intention of these grants is to fund research focusing on professional digitisation with a distinct and identifiable standalone output of making a body of information accessible to anyone upon completion of the project, up to a maximum of €10,000.

The Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme was established last year thanks to a generous bequest by the late Professor Kevin B. Nowlan. Last year the scheme was open to those working with historical sources/resources and provided funding for four projects including the digitisation of nineteenth century medical illustrations from Richmond Hospital, Dublin by Maeve Murphy, UCD and a digital corpus of Medieval Irish Latinate inscriptions by Prof. David Stifter, Maynooth University.

All details can be found here and queries can be addressed to grants@ria.ie

The Nowlan Digitisation scheme 2021/2022 opened on 17 December and will close on 15 February 2022.
