The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

1916 Portraits and Lives: Edward Daly

Edward Daly (1891–1916) was born in Limerick city to a strongly republican family, and worked as a clerk in Dublin. A member of the IRB and commandant of the 1st battalion Irish Volunteers, he commanded the rebel forces headquartered in the Four Courts and active along Church Street, and fought British advances to a virtual standstill. Among the prisoners held outdoors in teeming rain before the Rotunda on the night after the surrender, he was executed on 4 May 1916.

Edward Daly's biography is taken from the book 1916 Portraits and Lives published by the Royal Irish Academy. 100 prints of the 42 portraits and 3 scenes from the book, signed and numbered by the artist David Rooney, are available to order while quantities last. The original portraits from the book have been acquired for the State Collection by the OPW and will be on exhibit in 2016 at Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin. Read more 1916 biographies.
