The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

R.F. (Roy) Foster

R.F. (Roy) Foster is emeritus professor of Irish History at Oxford and at Queen Mary University of London. His many prizewinning books include Modern Ireland 1600–1972; Paddy and Mr Punch: connections in Irish and English history (Penguin, 1995); The Irish story: telling tales and making it up in Ireland (Penguin, 2001); the two-volume authorised biography of W.B. Yeats (Oxford University Press, 1998, 2005); Vivid Faces: the revolutionary generation in Ireland 1890–1923 (Penguin, 2014); and On Seamus Heaney (Princeton University Press, 2020). He is also a well-known cultural commentator and critic.
