The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Gavin Murphy

Gavin Murphy is a lecturer in Art History and Critical Theory at the Atlantic Technological University and Programme Chair of its MA in Creative Practice. He publishes regularly on contemporary visual arts and photographic practice. Journal publications include Circa, Gorse, Irish Review, Irish Studies Review, Printed Project, Source Photographic Review, Third Text and VAN. He contributed the essay ‘New Media art in Ireland’ to Art and architecture of Ireland, vol. 5, Twentieth century (2014). His two entries for the Modern Ireland in 100 artworks series were published in the Irish Times and appear in the book of the same title (2016).
