The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

J. R. Pilcher

Jonathan R. Pilcher is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and Palaeoecology in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen’s University Belfast. His research interests are environmental change and the history of atmospheric particle deposition on the Greenland ice sheet. His work includes a collaboration with the NEEM ice core drilling project and improvements to microprobe analysis for tephra identification. He is joint editor of Wood, Trees and Forests in Ireland: Proceedings of a Seminar Held on 22 and 23 February 1994.
