The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

John Agnew

John Agnew is Distinguished Professor of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles and has a visiting position at the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology, Queen’s University Belfast. He is very widely published in political geography and was co-founding-editor of the journal Geopolitics. He is a past-president of the Association of American Geographers, a Guggenheim Award winner, and recipient of the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the Association of American Geographers. Among his many books are Globalization and sovereignty (2009), Hegemony: The new shape of global power (2005), and Reinventing geopolitics: Geographies of modern statehood (2001).
