The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Marie Mahon

Marie Mahon lectures in Geography at NUI Galway. Marie’s research has been on change in rural places under urbanizing influences. She has published on place identity, civic engagement and governance of the rural. Her recent research is on the importance of the arts and culture for rural sustainability. She is a member of the Geosciences and Geographical Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy, and was part of the Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis project.
