The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Des McCafferty

Des McCafferty is a human geographer at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, where he is Head of Geography. He has research interests in urban social geography and in spatial planning and development, and his publications include the books Competitiveness, innovation and regional development in Ireland (ed. with Walsh, 1997) and Local partnerships for social inclusion (with Walsh and Craig, 1998). Current work is focused on aspects of urban regeneration and area-based anti-poverty initiatives, with particular reference to Limerick. He has served as President of the Geographical Society of Ireland, and as Chair of the Irish branch of the Regional Studies Association. He is currently a member of Limerick City Council’s Strategic Policy Committee for Housing and Social Policy.
