The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Ronan Foley

Ronan Foley is a health geographer at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth where he is the Course Leader for the MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing. His research has been funded by: the Health Research Board; the Environmental Protection Agency; the Centre for Cross-Border Studies; the Combat Poverty Agency; the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government; Ordnance Survey Ireland; and the NHS Executive, London. He has published on issues relating to access to health care and on the healing role of landscape, including his book, Healing waters: Therapeutic landscapes in historic and contemporary Ireland (2010). Ronan’s work on therapeutic landscapes has both historical and modern dimensions and he has a particular interest in the history of holy wells and of spa towns.
