We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

A history of Ireland in 10 words touring exhibition

The Royal Irish Academy has created a pop-up exhibition based on the book A history of Ireland in 100 words to inspire fresh interest in the Irish language by revealing connections between words we still use and words used in a bygone era.

This exhibition accompanies the book A history of Ireland in 100 words by Sharon Arbuthnot, Máire Ní Mhaonaigh and Gregory Toner. The exhibition was curated by the authors and Ruth Hegarty. Joe McLaren created the illustrations for the book and the exhibition, both of which were designed by Fidelma Slattery and edited by Helena King.

The history of Ireland told in this exhibition represents one-tenth of the words foregrounded in the book and a very small proportion of those preserved in eDIL. We hope visitors will be enticed to dip into the book and the dictionary, and so experience other words that express further strands of Ireland’s rich and varied story.

We would like to offer festival directors and venue curators the opportunity to exhibit the 100 words exhibition. The panels are available free of charge to venues, the borrower would simply pay shipping and insurance. We can work with curators or festival directors to create events to accompany the exhibition.
