We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

The Irish Times Debate semi-finals will take place in the Royal Irish Academy. These debates are in partnership with the ARINS Project. Some of Ireland’s most talented young debaters will tackle motions relating to this island’s future, north and south.

The four semi-finals in this year's series will run each week on Fridays from January 13 to February 3. The debates are open to the public and anyone who is interested is welcome to attend.

The reception will begin at 16:30, debate begins at 17:30

The motions and topics of each weeks semi-final can be found below:

  • January 13 This House Believes That mandatory coalition would be necessary in a united Ireland
  • January 20 This House Believes That to achieve a united Ireland Amhrán na bhFiann would have to go
  • January 27 This House Believes That the economic interests of this island, north and south, are threatened by a united Ireland
  • February 3 This House Believes That Ireland’s youth have forgotten the lessons of the Troubles
