The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland.

Jennifer Bruen

Dublin City University

Dr Jennifer Bruen is Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Dublin City University, and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies. She has a primary degree in international business and languages, and higher degrees in political education, eastern Germany and language teaching and learning.

Jennifer was awarded the DCU President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2003, the European Label for Innovation in Teaching and Learning in 2006, and is currently involved at a European (Committee of the Regions, European Commission) and national (Royal Irish Academy Committee for the Study of Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication, Irish Association for Applied Linguistics, One Voice for Languages) level in the development of language policy and the promotion of multilingualism and European citizenship. She is an assessor for the EACEA and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Social Science Education.

Jennifer's research interests are primarily in the field of applied linguistics: They include in particular language planning and policy at national and EU level, aspects of foreign language acquisition and language teaching and learning, in particular, the role of language learning strategies in the language learning process and the study of individual learner differences, in particular preferred learning styles, autonomy and motivation. Related areas of interest include Teaching German as a Foreign Language (DAF), preparation of students for a year abroad, the European Language portfolio initiative and German for international business. Additional interests include political and citizenship education in the EU particularly in Germany (East and West) and in Ireland.
