THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

I was a volunteer at Fishbourne Roman Palace, the Roman Baths at Bath and Portchester Castle.  I directed rescue excavations in Bath and Dorchester.  I directed the excavation of Norton Priory Augustinian priory in Cheshire, the basis of my PhD and a book published by Cambridge University Press.  I directed the transformation of the world's oldest railway buildings into the Museum of Science and industry in Manchester and made a special study of the nineteenth century timber trade.  In Melbourne I directed museums that included First Peoples culture, and which hosted major Aztec, Pompeii and Egyptian exhibitions.  I am CEO and Museum Director of EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. I am a member of the Heritage Council and have taken an interest in the work of the Discovery Programme.  I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Museums Association, and also a member of the Royal Archaeological Institute.  I am an occasional contributor to the Irish Times Abroad.
