John Walsh

University College Dublin

John Walsh is Professor of Structural Geology at University College Dublin where he is Director of the Irish Centre for Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) and Co-Director of the Fault Analysis Group. iCRAG is an SFI Research Centre with a presence in all of the geoscience-related research institutions in the Republic of Ireland and a remit to perform applied geoscience in the broad spectrum of associated application areas, including raw materials, marine, groundwater and hydrocarbons. John co-founded the Fault Analysis in the University of Liverpool, in 1985, becoming its Director in 1996 and overseeing its re-location to University College Dublin in 2000.  The group has published more than 120 articles in international journals and special publications, and is an established leader in the study of the geometry, growth and hydraulic properties of faults and in applying its research outputs to solve practical problems encountered in hydrocarbon, mineral and, more recently, groundwater industries. John has been Distinguished Lecturer for several societies including EAGE (2004) and AAPG (2004), and together with other members of the Fault Analysis Group won the NovaUCD 2010 Innovation Award. He was recently elected an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London, the first Irish appointee since the inception of the role in 1807.
