The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland.

Kevin Kavanagh

Professor Kevin Kavanagh is a member of the Biology Department, Maynooth University and Director of the BSc in Biomedical and Biological Science degree programme. He lectures in areas such as Microbial biotechnology, Medical mycology, Animal cell culture, and Microbiology.  He has research interests in fungal biology and in the area of pathogen-host interactions. He has graduated 35 PhD students since his appointment in 1995 and currently supervises the work of three students. His research utilises a variety of cellular and proteomic techniques to unravel the mechanisms used by pathogenic fungi to colonise and disseminate through vertebrate and invertebrate tissue. He has published widely and his work has been cited over 5000 times with a h-index of 41. He has been supported by funding from SFI, EI, IRC, EU and Industry.
