THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Margaret Stokes was a pioneering figure in Irish antiquarian studies. This lecture will explore Stokes as a woman who only reached her potential when she was over fifty, resulting in a creative output in art, art history and archaeology, in addition to her skills as an editor and writer. She was extraordinarily hardworking and singular in her enthusiasm and dedication to Celtic Art. Recognition came to Stokes in the form of honorary membership of the Royal Irish Academy, the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and the Antiquarian Society of Scotland.
