The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland.

Marie Mahon

National University of Ireland Galway

Marie Mahon is a lecturer in Human Geography at the School of Geography & Archaeology, National University of Ireland Galway.  Marie’s research has focused on change in rural places and communities especially from urbanizing influences. She has published on urban-rural relationships, place-based identity and meanings and representations of rurality, civic engagement in the rural and its governance.  From 2009-2011 she was part of an EU FP7 Consortium - ‘Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalisation.’ Her recent research is on the importance of the arts and culture for rural sustainability, supported by the Irish Research Council (New Foundations Grant) and a Ruralia Visiting Scholarship (University of Helsinki’s Ruralia Institute).  Marie is a member of a 4-partner consortium responsible for managing the National Rural Network in Ireland (2016-2021).
