Nabeel A Riza

Nabeel, A, Riza, Ph.D. is Chair Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. Riza holds Masters (1985) and Ph.D. (1989) degrees from Caltech. He has made pioneering innovations in the field of photonics with several of his inventions deployed worldwide. Riza’s inventions include the CAOS camera, fault-tolerant digital MEMS fiber-optics, agile optical wireless, electronic lens-based vision testing and imaging, self-imaging fiber coupling model, liquid crystal and analog-digital fiber-optic RF antenna control, agile pixel MEMS laser beam profiler and 3-D analyzer, and hybrid design Silicon Carbide extreme thermometry. Riza has served as the Head School of Engineering (2013-16) and Head of EEE Dept (2011-2013) at UCC. He is the recipient of the International Optics Commission 2001 ICO Prize, Carl Zeiss Foundation 2001 Abbe Medal, 2009 & 2010 IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer Award, 2011 ASEE Senior Faculty Fellow Award, 1994 General Electric Gold Patent Medal and the 2009 Ireland SFI Walton Award. He holds 46 U.S. patents. Riza is the founder of Nuonics, Inc. He has published 327 international journal and conference papers and has authored the textbook Photonic Signals and Systems: An Introduction, McGraw Hill, 2013. Riza has received the Fellow Award of the IEEE, IET, European Optical Society, OSA, SPIE and Honorary Fellow Award of Engineers Ireland Society. In 2016, he was appointed Member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) Engineering and Computer Science Committee.
