The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Higher Education Futures Group Established by the Royal Irish Academy

Welcoming the establishment of this new all-island group, Chair, Professor Gerry McKenna MRIA, has said:

“Higher education in Ireland and Northern Ireland has an admirable track record in fulfilling its role as a public good including its contribution to economic, social and cultural development. Major current challenges include dealing with the impact of COVID-19 and its long-term consequences as well as the implications of Brexit for future cooperation and collaboration across the island and with Great Britain and the EU. It is an opportune moment to examine the various issues and their inter-relationships and to outline a framework for the future development of the sector”. Read more
