The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Cunningham Medal 2013-2014

Professor Patrick Honohan, MRIA, Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, was awarded the Royal Irish Academy’s Cunningham Medal at a ceremony in Dublin on Monday, 10 March 2014.

Professor Luke Drury, President of the Royal Irish Academy (2011-14) said ‘in honouring Patrick Honohan today with the Cunningham medal we celebrate not only an economist of international stature and renown but a Member of the Academy with a keen sense of civic responsibility. The medal shows Hibernia, supported by scholarship and science, brandishing the cap of liberty, hopefully a good omen for the future."

After the Medal conferring, Professor Honohan gave a lecture entitled “Irish Exceptionalism in the World Economy”.
