We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Academy Gold Medals recipients announced

The President and Council of the Royal Irish Academy are delighted to announce the awarding of the 2021 Academy Gold Medals.

The Academy awards two Gold Medals every year. The medals are awarded to individuals who have made a demonstrable and internationally recognised outstanding scholarly contribution in their fields. The medals aim to identify and recognise inspirational figures in order to celebrate the achievements of higher education in Ireland and to inspire future generations.

The 2021 Academy Gold Medal in the Social Sciences has been awarded to Professor Ruth M.J. Byrne, MRIA and the 2021 Academy Gold Medal in the Environmental Sciences and Geosciences has been awarded to Professor Jennifer C. McElwain, MRIA.

An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, T.D. will present the Gold Medals in the Saloon Room, Provost’s House, Trinity College Dublin at 12:00, Monday, 4 April 2022.
