We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

New Executive Secretary appointed

Ireland’s leading body of experts in the humanities and sciences, the Royal Irish Academy, has appointed Dr. Tony Gaynor as its Executive Secretary.

Dr. Gaynor, who joins the Academy from the Department of Education and Skills, has a doctorate in history from Trinity College Dublin, professional qualifications in management, public policy, governance, and strategic planning, and twenty years’ experience in public service. “We are delighted that Dr. Gaynor will be leading our executive management team,” says Academy President Professor Peter Kennedy. “He combines extensive management expertise and leadership experience with a passion for scholarship.”   

Biography of Dr Tony Gaynor

Dr Tony Gaynor has a PhD in History from Trinity College Dublin and professional qualifications in management, public policy, governance, and strategic planning. He has twenty years’ experience in the public service, most recently in the Department of Education and Skills, where he has been responsible for developing policies for the funding, regulation, access to and quality assurance of higher education. Dr. Gaynor has also previously worked within the higher education sector teaching history on a part-time basis for twenty years.
