The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Fergal O'Brien

Fergal O'Brien, leading innovator in human tissue biomaterials was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

He is chair of Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine in the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and is deputy director of the AMBER Centre (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research). He is a leading innovator in advanced biomaterials for tissue repair, has published about 200 articles in leading journals and trained over 40 PhD students. Professor O'Brien is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including most recently a €3million advanced grant from the European Research Council.
