The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: France A. Cordova

France A. Cordova, an astrophysicist, was admitted as an Honorary Member of the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

Dr. Cordova is the fourteenth director of the National Science Foundation, President Emerita of Purdue University, and Chancellor Emerita of the University of California, Riverside, where she was a distinguished professor of Physics and Astronomy.

Her scientific contributions have been in the areas of observational and experimental astrophysics, multi-spectral research on x-ray and gamma ray sources, and space-borne instrumentation.
