The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Patrick Lonergan

Patrick Lonergan one of Ireland's foremost theatre scholars and an academic leader of the Digitisation of the Abbey and Gate Theatre archive was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

Patrick Lonergan is author or editor of seven books, including the widely-used Methuen book of modern Irish drama. His Theatre and globalisation was winner of the Theatre Book Prize in 2008, breaking new ground in the field. As academic director of the Abbey Theatre digitisation project at NUI Galway, he has made possible a new era in Irish theatre scholarship.
