The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

New lives added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography online

14 July 2016

The June 2016 supplement has been added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography (DIB) online. Consisting of 41 lives, most of whom died in the years 2009 and 2010. 

Some of the highlights include the sculptor Edward Delaney, the snooker player Alex Higgins, the actor Mick Lally, the doctor and rugby player Karl Mullen, the broadcaster Gerry Ryan, the businessman Tony Ryan and the physicist Sheila Tinney.
