We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

The 2020 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes

A call has been issued by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome, Italy for the 2020 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes.

The aim of the Antonio Feltrinelli Fund is to award national and international prizes to distinguished scholars in the various fields of science and the arts. The Fellows of the Accademia dei Lincei are not eligible for nomination. The International prizes may be awarded to both Italians and foreigners. The prizes are conferred annually, on a rotating basis in the following fields:

  1. Humanities;
  2. Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences;
  3. Literature;
  4. Arts;
  5. Medicine.

Candidates must be under the age of 40 on the 31st of October of the year of the call for nomination of the Prize.

The 2020 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes, will be awarded in Humanities in the following fields:

  • one International Prize for Monetary Institutions, in the amount of € 250,000 (gross amount before tax deductions);
  • four National Prizes reserved to Italian citizens, in the amount of € 65,000 each (gross amount before tax deductions):
  • one in Philology and Linguistics;
  • one in Archeology;
  • one in History and Geography;
  • one in Philosophical sciences.

In addition, four National Prizes entitled Antonio Feltrinelli Giovani will be awarded in the
fields of:

  • Philology and Linguistics;
  • Music History and Culture;
  • History and Geography;
  • Philosophical sciences.

These national prizes to the amount of €50,000 each (gross amount before tax deductions), will be awarded to Italian scholars - under the age of 40 on 31 October 2019 – for work that represents a significant and original contribution in the respective prize category.

The Royal Irish Academy is aware that there are many remarkable scholars of Italian Nationality in Ireland so in addition to the international prizes, we are happy to also nominate Italian scholars for the National Prizes.
